Cosmetology License Requirements in Hawaii

A shortage of salon professionals means that, despite the difficult economic climate, salon professionals such as cosmetologists, manicurists, estheticians, electrologists, barbers, and skin care specialists should enjoy solid career prospects. All States require cosmetologists and certain other personal appearance workers to be licensed. In Hawaii, you need a license to work as a cosmetologist, barber, hairdresser, esthetician, or nail technician. Licenses can be gained through Hawaii beauty schools or Hawaii cosmetology schools.

Licensure requirements in Hawaii are as follows:

  • Cosmetologists: 1800 classroom hours, 3600 apprenticeship hours
  • Barbering: 1500 hours
  • Hairdressing: 1250 classroom hours, 2500 apprenticeship hours
  • Esthetician: 600 classroom hours, 1100 apprenticeship hours
  • Nail technician: 350 classroom hours, 700 apprenticeship hours

A written exam is required at the end of the program and there is no reciprocity allowing licenses obtained from another State to be transferred to Hawaii without additional training.
