Cosmetology License Requirements in Illinois

To protect public health, safety and welfare, all States require cosmetologists and certain other personal appearance workers to be licensed. Illinois beauty schools and cosmetology schools offer programs to help you to gain the license you need. The licensure requirements in Illinois are:

  • Cosmetologist: 1500 classroom hours
  • Esthetician: 750 classroom hours
  • Nail technician: 350 classroom hours

After completing your classroom training, you traditionally need to pass a written exam at the end of your program as well. In addition, all applicants much be at least 16 years of age and possess at least an 8th grade education. Applicants who do not have a high school diploma traditionally must pass an ""Ability to Benefit"" test prior to enrolling in school.
