Cosmetology License Requirements in Pennsylvania

Skin care. Cosmetology. Esthetics. The demand for graduates in these fields is growing--particularly in Pennsylvania. That's why the collection of accredited Pennsylvania cosmetology schools attracts students from across the nation. According to the Pennsylvania Department of State, here are the license requirements for positions in this field.

  • Cosmetologist. Need a tenth grade education or equivalent, 1,250 hours in a licensed cosmetology school or 2000 hours in an approved apprenticeship, and pass theory and practice State Board exams.
  • Manicurist (Nail Technician). Requires a tenth grade education or equivalent, 200 hours in a licensed cosmetology school inside of one month, and pass theory and practice State Board exams
  • Esthetician. Tenth grade education or equivalent, 300 hours in a licensed cosmetology school, and pass theory and practice State Board exams
  • Barber. Eighth grade education or equivalent required, 1,250 hours in a licensed barber school or in a licensed shop under a licensed manager or teacher, and pass theory and practice State Board exams
