Cosmetology License Requirements in South Carolina

The first step on the road to a new aesthetic career is to earn a license as a cosmetologist, manicurist, esthetician, electrologist, barber, or skin care professional. According to the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation, these are the regulations you should expect to comply with when applying for a license to operate:

  • Cosmetologist. Be at least 16 years old; obtain tenth grade education or equivalent; complete 1,500 hours in a cosmetology school approved by the Board; pass a written and practical exam.
  • Manicurist. Be at least 16 years old; obtain tenth grade education or equivalent; complete 300 hours in a nail technician school approved by the Board; pass a written and practical exam.
  • Esthetician. Be at least 16 years old; obtain tenth grade education or equivalent; complete 450 hours in classes in skin care at a school approved by the Board; pass a written and practical exam.
  • Barber. Complete 1500 hours of barber training from an accredited barber school, or take 12 months of training under a licensed barber instructor.
