Cosmetology License Requirements in Utah

In every state, there are a minimum number of education and experience hours required before you can become a licensed cosmetologist, nail technician, esthetician, electrologist, or barber. Utah is no exception. Becoming a cosmetologist is more than simply learning to cut hair or paint nails. Cosmetologists, estheticians, barbers, and nail technicians all must know a bit of anatomy, bacteriology, chemistry, business practices, and sanitation. In all facets of cosmetology, beauty school can get you closer to your career goals than experience alone.

Following are several Utah cosmetology licenses and the number of classroom hours required to obtain each license:

  • Barber: 1,000 hours of class
  • Cosmetologist/Barber: 2,000 hours of class
  • Electrologist: 600 hours of class
  • Esthetician: 600 hours of class
  • Nail Technician: 300 hours of class

Advantages of Utah Cosmetology Schools

While it's possible to earn a license without attending beauty school, the alternative consists of hundreds of hours of experience, which can be difficult to obtain professionally if you don't have a license. Enrolling in a Utah beauty or cosmetology school allows you to earn your license in half the time it would take to earn a license with experience alone. If you live in Utah and you're interested in pursuing a career in cosmetology, research local beauty schools to find out which one is right for you.
