If you are interested in a career in hair styling, you will need a state-accredited license in order to become a professional hairstylist and exercise in a hair salon. You could work as a shampoo technician without a required degree, but most other practices within professional hair care will require specialized certification. At hairstyling schools, you have the option to take courses besides the basics for hairstyling (hair shampooing, hair coloring, hair cutting, hair design); i.e. you can also specialize in cosmetology or become a barber. In the end of your professional hair care training, you are required to take a written, oral and a practical exam about professional hair styling. With a hair styling certificate, you could become self-employed and open your own professional hairstyling salon. If you have already a degree as a professional salon technician, you should still consider attending regular training classes about hair design and hair style in order to be in tune with the current hair trends.
