Beauty schools around the country are seeing an increase in enrollments, largely due to the growing demand for cosmetologists. Particularly in demand are manicurist/pedicurists, aestheticians, and day spa professionals, all among the fastest growing positions in the industry.

While cosmetology schools differ, you can generally complete your cosmetologist training in 9 to 18 months. After graduating, you can become licensed by passing a rigorous written and practical exam. This examination is required in all 50 states. When you are a certified cosmetologist, you can work as a hair stylist, skin care specialist, make up artist, or nail technician in a salon or spa, or own your own cosmetology business. As many as 46 percent of cosmetologists are self-employed.

Why Minnesota is a Cut Above

Minnesota is recognized as one of the world's best places to do business, and it enjoys some of the most women-owned businesses in the country, with 32.9 percent of private businesses in the state owned by women. Minneapolis/St. Paul tied for 4th place among the top 50 areas in the country with the greatest share of majority-female-owned businesses. This is excellent news for salon owners and cosmetologists with an interest in self-employment.

Fortunately, Minnesota ranks 11th in the country for its per capita personal income, at $41,034. In 2007, the 9,870 hair stylists/barbers in Minnesota earned a median hourly income of $12.52; manicurists/pedicurists numbered 960 and earned a median hourly income of $11.16; and aestheticians (estheticians) numbered 480 with a median hourly income of $15.91.
