The $56 billion beauty industry offers numerous career options to graduates of the nation's beauty schools, which is why U.S. News & World Report ranked cosmetology in the top 30 of its Best Careers list for 2009.
Of course, your career options range from the traditional--barber or hair stylist, make-up artist, aesthetician (or esthetician), or nail technician--to the not-so-traditional, yet steadily growing, such as massage therapist or other specialist in holistic treatment, such as hydrotherapy or reflexology. And as medical spas increase in popularity--since July 2007, their numbers have grown by 85 percent--those specialists will be in demand as well.
Your cosmetology program is likely to include courses involving chemistry and biology, sanitation, and anatomy. Hands-on training will include hair styling, cutting, and coloring; facials, waxes, and other skin care specialties; make-up application; and manicuring and pedicuring. Following your program, which may take nine to 18 months, you'll need to take an exam to earn your cosmetologist license.
A recent Forbes list of the Best States for Business ranked Missouri 29th, and an impressive 15th for its low business costs. Additionally, St. Louis was ranked the 15th Best City for Young Professionals, and the 4th Most Affordable Place to Live Well. All of this means that cosmetologists, nearly half of whom are self-employed, should enjoy a favorable business climate and excellent quality of life.
